I'm not a Zen Buddhist, but I've looked into Zen as part of my research into swordsmanship. As a sabreur, I belong to a Western tradition which shares some ideas with Eastern swordsmanship but which is quite different in most ways. Winston King's book is a good treatment of Zen in the context of the Samurai culture:

One of the difficulties with Zen is the ease with which the Samurai culture overcame the Buddhist injunction against killing. King explains this pretty well and is a good counterbalance to the more apologetic views of D. T. Suzuki and others. The Kirkus Reviews for this book is available at:
